Interview with board member Janine Sommer

How did you first hear about IFIL?
IFIL was promoting its intercultural study trips at the University of Lucerne and they (IFIL itself and the study trips) got me intrigued right away.

How did you become a board member of IFIL?
I met Danny Bürkli at an event and we talked about IFIL (I just came back from the great trip to Brazil). Then, I learnt that IFIL was looking for a head of marketing for its board. Finally, I applied spontaneously and here we go: I’m now a member of the IFIL board, responsible for Marketing and Events.

What was your best travel experience?
Well, there are so many great experiences. I just love to leave things behind for some time and to jump into new and exciting travel experiences which offer me insights into different cultures, breathtaking natural beauty and various local cuisines.

What is you worst travel story?
Once, some friends and I got a little bit lost in the jungle. But somehow, we managed to find our way out. GPS is great, but unfortunately it will not work everywhere.

Best travel music?
Depends on my mood but Stereophonics and We Are Scientists are always on my play list.

Where do you want to go?
From Thailand to Laos via Cambodia and Vietnam.

Why participate in an intercultural study trip with IFIL?
You get the chance to gain a deep inside view of a country, which you would not get otherwise. You will get to meet decision makers from government institutions, representatives of NGOs active for example in human rights and you will have discussions with local students and youth organizations in which you can learn about the country from a perspective not offered to you when travelling on your own. Additionally, you can travel the countryside by getting to know some off –tourist spots.
Intercultural study trips with IFIL will just broaden your horizon and you will experience a trip, which you will never forget. It’s definitely worth it, to feel the IFIL Spirit!

Where wouldn't you go again?
Right now, I can’t remember a single destination where I wouldn’t go again.
