Program IFIL.ch study trip to Cambodia

Our two week journey begins on in the capital of Pnom Penh. Here we will spend time with local NGO’s discussing Cambodia’s past, present, and future. We will learn about the atrocities of the Khmer rouge and what is currently being done to rebuild Cambodia. We will visit the splendour of the royal palace coupled with the silver pagoda. Traditional silk markets, temples, and charity run restaurants will be frequent destinations. Other sites will focus more on the historical and political aspects of Cambodia. We will visit the old S-21 prison where the victims of the Khmer rouge were tortured and we will venture to mass grave sites where thousands were buried. From here we venture northwest to Siem Reap. We will spend approximately 4-6 days visiting other cities along the way to Siem Reap. As of now, our itinerary looks like this: Phnom Penh- Kampong Cham- Kratie- Kampong Thom- Battambang- Siem Reap We will fly into Phnom Penh and out of Siem Reap.

# 1)A trip to the rice fields to learn about Asia and its main source of food, and its impacts upon society and culture. After seeing firsthand how locals grow and trade rice, our group can appreciate how important rice is in the daily lives of millions across the world.

# 2)Volunteering at an orphanage to foster intercultural awareness and do our part to help out. Spending time with children who are most likely to be victims of Cambodia’s rough past, we will feel motivated to make a positive impact in Cambodia.

# 3)Speaking with local NGO’s to learn about issues Cambodia is facing. We could speak to groups to learn about land mines, orphanages, the Khmer rouge, and Cambodia’s rough history. After seeing what other groups are doing in Cambodia, we will understand the seriousness of Cambodia’s problems while gaining an appreciation for what others are doing. Our group will learn that recovery is possible when motivated and like-minded individuals decide to make change in the world.

# 4)Enjoying local cuisine and learning about the Cambodian marketplace. Tasting Cambodia’s rich cuisine flavored with fresh herbs and fragrant ingredients will offer culinary surprises. We will also visit markets to experience firsthand how locals make, trade and purchase their produce. Daytrips to crafts markets that are operated by disabled citizens (from all the landmines) will also be an eye opening experience. We could also visit the most vibrant markets packed with silks and interesting cultural products.

# 5)Visiting local temples in each city we visit will give us additional insight into Buddhism and its impact upon Southeast Asian culture.

# 6)Viewing the ancient art of Aspara dance. This will provide us with a deeper understanding of all of the art depicted on Angkor Wat and its walls.

# 7)Part of our belief is that some of the best experiences are unplanned. We could spend a day in each major city (Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Battambang) enjoying sights at our own pace- as a whole or in two to three person groups, so that we can all come home with individual memories and stories from the IFIL trip.

Once we reach Siem Reap, we will be rewarded with the majestic beauty of Angkor Wat. This world renowned UNESCO heritage site will be one of the most awe inspiring sites we visit. A 3-day guided exploration of the Temples of Angkor will provide an excellent background of Southeast Asian and Cambodian history. Prior to the trip, make sure to read as much as you can about Cambodia and responsible travel in Cambodia. Learn about anti-malarial drugs and see a travel doctor for recommendations on immunizations and medication. Asian infrastructure does not always run as smoothly as at home. Delays and setbacks are possible. Unplanned events will most likely happen, regardless of how well this trip is organized. Come prepared for anything, and don’t hold Cambodian infrastructure to the same standards as at home. In the end, we will look back upon this trip as a great time and a wonderful learning experience. Attend our pre-trip workshop to learn more and meet your fellow travelers.
