Thailand 02.08.2009 - 16.08.2009

Do you feel like visiting Thailand and Southeast Asia in this upcoming summer? Are you interested in connecting your individual trip with exciting impressions from culture, politics, society and economy? Would you like to experience more than just the beautiful nature and the satisfied people in “the land of smile”?

During our two-week stay in Thailand we will provide you multisided and differentiated views on the cultural, political and economic situation in Thailand.

In discussions with academics and journalists we will find out more about the widely unnoticed, but long lasting and violent conflict between the Malay-Muslims and the Thais in southern Thailand and we will try to find out why Thailand experiences relatively many enforced changes of government. What is the king’s role in Thai politics? Why is his influence on society that strong?

Furthermore we will go into the matter of Buddhism as religion and as a keeper of social conventions and founder of social peace. In dialog with different representatives of NGO’s, we will have the chance to get to know more about problems, such as a flood of refugees from Myanmar, human trafficking of sex workers and child labor.

Further meetings will bring us together with European entrepreneurs in Thailand and giving us the possibility to find out what business in Thailand is like, what values are dominant in the world of business and why mostly Chinese and Indians are very successful.

There will also be enough time to experience the pulsating city of Bangkok. Having an extended diner in one of the traditional and authentic wooden houses in the city centre, touring through the bars or clubs, having a midnight drink up on the roof of the 64 storied State Tower with a breathtaking view over the illuminated city, shopping in one of the fancy shopping malls or on the famous traditional markets, we will get a chance to experience this wonderful city in all its facets.

Last but not least will we be able to get away from restless Bangkok for a weekend trip and enjoy the impressing nature of Thailand.

The participants will receive further information regarding the program as well as the cultural, political and economical history of Thailand shortly before the trip. The trip is intended for those of you who have an interest in Southeast Asia and who want to experience two unforgettable weeks in a small group of approximately 16 people. No previous knowledge is necessary.
